Animals take their humans to blessing

St. Augustine of Canterbury Anglican Church held its fifth Blessing of the Animals event on Saturday, Oct. 3 at the parish worship location at 168 North St. in Saco (the Grange building). Father Kevin LaMarre, OSB, officiated and was assisted by the Rev. Deacon Allen Ryan. Father LaMarre is prior of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Priory in Raymond. The Priory provides shelter to all manner of lost and abused animals. Donations received during the blessing were given to the Priory’s shelter. Since 2011, St. Augustine has hosted the event in October in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the 12th-century deacon who is globally recognized and revered as the patron saint of animals and the environment. The inspiration that led to hosting the increasingly popular event is two-fold: to remember St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures and to celebrate the loving bond between animals and their owners.
