Saco resident given annual Kany Award

Mary Jane Sawyer Mary Jane Sawyer Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution awarded Mary Jane Sawyer of Saco the 2015 A. William Kany Jr. Community Service Award.

The award, established in 2006 to honor Kany, president of the Saco-based bank until 1995, is awarded annually to a bank employee who exemplifies Kany’s passion for community service and for helping others. Sawyer was chosen from a group of Saco & Biddeford Savings employees nominated by their peers.

“The effect Mary Jane’s hours of service have had on young and old is heartwarming and humbling. She certainly has a direct impact on improving the lives of people emotionally,” said Lynne Belanger, vice president and manager of the Saco and Biddeford branches, and one of the individuals who nominated Sawyer for the award.

“Mary Jane’s giving heart is witnessed at the bank daily. The level of care and compassion she shows her co-workers and customers is one to be emulated, and contributes to why we are more than just a community bank,” Belanger said. “Her community involvement mirrors the bank’s and Mr. Kany’s mission to serve our customers and the communities in which we live and work.”

Since her childhood, Sawyer’s parents had a major influence on her involvement with nonprofit organizations and community events. Over the years, her involvement impacted organizations such as Junior Achievement, the Ronald McDonald House, Special Olympics Maine, the United Way of York County, Camp Waban, Mary’s Walk and youth sports programs.

“My parents certainly influenced my current decisions to help others as much as possible,” Sawyer said. “I have volunteered for many organizations over the years in one way or another.”

Each year, the winner of the Kany award designates a favorite charity to receive a $500 contribution from the bank in their name. As the winner of the 2015 award, Sawyer has chosen the Ronald McDonald House and the Saco Jets to each receive $250. Sawyer, former owner of Pastry Gallery in Saco, joined the bank in 2004 as a teller in Saco, and later became teller supervisor, then customer relations associate in the Old Orchard Beach branch. She later became a customer relations officer in the Biddeford branch, and is currently in that position at the main office in Saco. She resides in Saco with her husband and two children.
