Get your reusable bag of summer goodness at library

By Bob Cochran

Fun, relaxation and plenty more makes for great reasons to visit the beach in Old Orchard during summer. It also makes for great reasons to visit Libby Library here in Old Orchard.

Before we tell you about our summer offerings, we want to make a correction regarding the lunch program we told you about in our previous Library Links article. We informed you that these lunches were being served from noon until 12:30 p.m. The lunches are actually being served from 11:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Friday. These lunches are free for children 18 and younger, and also available to parents and caregivers for $3.

There’s plenty to offer for the kids after lunch, too. The Summer Reading Program gets underway noon, immediately following lunch. The program for this year is “Full STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Ahead.” This week, the theme centers around technology. There’ll be Dash & Dot, snap circuits, hexbugs and Sphero on hand for plenty of tech-centered fun.

For even more fun, there’s our Summer Family Fun Film series, which offers family friendly films on the first and third Friday of each month from June through August. The films are shown from 6 to 8 p.m. in our comfortable, air conditioned Community Room. We even have some very tasty (and free!) popcorn available to make your viewing experience even more enjoyable. A full listing of this summer’s films is available at ooblibrary.org.

We’d also like to remind you that we’re still looking for donations of softballs, Wiffle ball sets, tennis racquets and other small sporting goods for our Library of Things. Hardballs, baseball bats and other items that could possibly damage nearby homes, cars and other property cannot be accepted.

We saved one of our biggest news items for next to last. For the first time ever, we are offering Sunday hours during summer. We are now open on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Sept. 11. This is great news for those looking for a Sunday beach read, a DVD for a rainy afternoon or to enjoy reading a book in a comfortable, air-conditioned environment on a hot, muggy day.

We have even more exciting news to tell you about. The Libby Memorial Library has been chosen by the Saco Hannaford as the latest beneficiary of the Hannaford Helps Reusable Bag program. This means that when you purchase a $2.29 reusable bag at Saco Hannaford, $1 of that purchase goes toward assisting Libby Library in its efforts to enrich, inform and educate the community. Please help yourself, your local library as well as the environment by purchasing one of those reusable bags the next time you stop by the Saco Hannaford.

Also, next time you stop by the library, be sure to check out the Book Shed run by the Friends of the Library. There’s a great selection of gently used books and DVDs available at very affordable prices. The Shed is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

You can also stay current on library events by regularly checking our website, ooblibrary.org or liking our Facebook page. You can now catch up on the goings on here at the library on Twitter by following us @ ooblibrary, too.
