Former St. James student earns prestigious scholarship

John-Paul Haley-Read II John-Paul Haley-Read II Cheverus High School Senior John-Paul Haley-Read II, son of John-Paul and Colleen Haley- Read of Kennebunk was awarded the 2016 Leonard F. Ahern Scholarship of $30,000, which provides $7,500 per year for four years of college tuition and expenses. He is a graduate of St. James School in Biddeford.

Haley-Read graduated Magna Cum Laude and is a member of the National Honor Society. He was the recipient of the St. Timothy Youth Recognition Award from the Diocese of Portland.

He has been an active contributor to the school campus through involvement in the Key Club, Robotics Team, indoor/outdoor track, Ultimate Frisbee Captain, twice an attendee of the St. Ignatian Teach-In for Justice in Washington, D.C., and a participant in Seeds of Peace Camp in Otisfield.

Haley-Read has been active in the Holy Spirit Parish Community. He traveled to Maggoty, Jamaica to offer support to impoverished children, is a five-year bible camp volunteer, Habitat for Humanity volunteer, and a 10-year altar server. He has also been a member of the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. He will be attending Merrimack College in the fall majoring in biology.
