Eleanor Whitehouse

Eleanor Fuller Shedd Whitehouse, 93, passed away on Sept. 11, 2016, following a very brief bout of pneumonia. Eleanor was born Oct. 27, 1922 in Akron, Ohio, to Emerson and Eleanor Shedd.

She spent her early years in Cape May Courthouse, New Jersey. The family then moved to North Ferrisburg, Vermont, where she completed her elementary education in a one-room schoolhouse.

Eleanor attended high school at Northfield School for Girls (now Northfield Mount Hermon) in Northfield, Massachusetts. While at Northfield, she was involved in an historic event. The hurricane of 1938 came up the Connecticut River Valley to Northfield.

While the students were gathered in their dormitory dining hall, the wind blew down the chimney, crushing Eleanor’s pelvis and killing a girl seated near her. She missed a full year of school, but graduated from Northfield with the class of 1941. Very active in alumni affairs, she attended her most recent class reunion in 2011 at age 89.

Eleanor entered Mary Fletcher Hospital School of Nursing in Burlington, Vermont, and graduated as a registered nurse. During this time she met Arnold “Whitie” Whitehouse, an MP in the Army Air Corps who was stationed nearby. They were married in North Ferrisburg in 1945, and later moved to Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where they raised their family.

In 1970 Arnold and Eleanor moved to Maine, spending the rest of their lives on Langsford Road in their beloved Cape Porpoise. Eleanor was an enthusiastic member of the choir at the Church on the Cape.

Eleanor worked as an RN all her working life. She retired from Southern Maine Medical Center where she was also active in the hospital auxiliary known as the TWIGs.

Whitie and Eleanor loved to travel in their later years, particularly in Portugal. Even after Whitie’s passing in 2009, Eleanor made one more trip to Portugal with a Northfield classmate.

Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, Arnold, and her sister, Pollyann Shedd Smith. She is survived by her brother, E. Warner Shedd and his wife Edie Shedd of E. Calais, Vermont, daughter Eleanor Whitehouse and her husband Jack Zwick of Salisbury, North Carolina, sons Arnold (Buddy) and his wife Mimi, Jonathan Whitehouse and his wife Miriam, of Kennebunk, nine grandchildren: William Stewart and Eleanor Poling, of New York, A. Cameron Whitehouse of New York City, Jesse Whitehouse of Kennebunk, Danika Whitehouse of Wells, Carlin Whitehouse of Portland, Sprague Whitehouse of Portland, Oregon, Grayson Whitehouse of New York City, McHale Whitehouse of Montreal, Quebec, and three great grandchildren: Sam and Phillip Poling, of New York, and Liora Whitehouse of Portland, Maine.

The family of Eleanor Whitehouse wishes to express sincere gratitude for the love and support of many friends and neighbors, The Church on the Cape, Kennebunkport Emergency Medical Services, Home Instead, and St. Andre’s of Biddeford. Though Eleanor was not mobile the last two years of her life, she was fully alert and quite the conversationalist.

A celebration of her life will be held at Atlantic Hall on Oct. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m.
