Reflections of Christmas: Past, present and future

Halloween is over, so it must be time for Christmas. Sure, I know that unless you are operating a big box store Christmas could probably wait until at least after Thanksgiving, but at Dyer Library and Saco Museum we begin to think of Christmas in late January or early February and the planning goes on from there. Why? Because we are your center for the Festival of Trees, our annual event that both celebrates the holidays in absolutely optimum festivity, and also is a major fundraiser for the library and museum.

This year’s theme is “Reflections of Christmas: Past, Present, Future.” Thinking about that theme, we are offering a new and fun way to participate. You can sponsor and decorate a “family tree” (or wreath! But “family wreath” doesn’t sound quite so good.) A tree is $150 and a wreath is $50. When the Festival ends you can keep what you made. Use family photos, memorabilia or whatever suits your heart to create a special holiday memento of your family’s special and unique heritage. How cool is that? Just call or stop by Saco Museum to learn more and pick up your wreath or tree to decorate.

This year’s events include the gala, a chance to don your holiday finery and share an evening of holiday cheer with your friends and neighbors (along with good music, fine food and nifty drink.) The gala is 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 and tickets are $20 apiece. You can purchase them in advance by calling 283-3861, ext. 113, by dropping by the museum in person, or just buy them that evening. The museum will be bedecked with amazing decorations and sure to inspire enough holiday enthusiasm to carry you through the shopping and cooking and Christmas card writing and…

The ribbon cutting, when we officially open our doors for the holiday season is, as always, the day after Thanksgiving, this year at 5 p.m. on Nov. 25. That’s followed on Monday, Nov. 28 with Senior Guests Day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., a time when the museum is open just to senior members of our community. You can book a time to visit with your group by emailing Zoe Thomas at zoebthomas@sacomuseum.org or by calling her at 283- 3861, ext. 115.

Events especially for children are a drawing contest, Kids’ Craft Day, tea with Mrs. Claus and a visit with Santa. Kid’s Craft Day is 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 in the big meeting room of Dyer Library. This is the opportunity to make a couple of fun Christmas crafts and enjoy some wintery refreshments, (free, of course.) Just drop in. Tea with Mrs. Claus has two seatings, at noon and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10. Mrs. Claus is eager to receive your call to set up a reservation (as space is limited.) If Mrs. Claus can’t take your call, the children’s librarians will be happy to do so instead. Call 283-3861, ext. 102, but hurry because spaces go fast. Santa will be at Saco Museum noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11 to visit with children; no reservations required to see the man in the jolly red suit. The drawing contest artwork will be on display in Dyer Library, as always. Hundreds of schoolchildren complete these marvelous, evocative pictures during class time and then get to see them all displayed in the library when they visit.

With the exception of the gala, all events are free, full of holiday cheer, fun and extremely festive. Join us. We look forward to seeing you! And, um, Merry Christmas?
