Biddeford website changed for transparency

BIDDEFORD – The city plans to update the Biddeford city website with the aim of adding transparency to government process.

According to Brian Phinney, Biddeford’s technology director and chief operating officer, the site will include a tab that will provide better access to 10 items that have been identified by a nonprofit agency, Sunshine Review, as essential to open government. Those 10 items are information regarding elected and appointed officials, administrative officials, meeting, budgets, audits, local taxes, permits and zoning, public records, municipal contracts and lobbying and advocacy.

Sunshine Review worked to promote transparency in government, although the organization dissolved in recent years. Nevertheless, in his report at the Nov. 1 council meeting, City Manager Jim Bennett referred to Sunshine Review’s 10-item list as “industry standard.” Bennett is hopeful that the change will make the website easier to navigate.
