Biddeford gets into holiday spirit

Downtown Biddeford is gearing up for a showcase of pop-up businesses, lighting displays, and retail open houses that will complement the traditional Downtown Holiday Festival in City Square on Friday, Dec. 2.

The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. in City Square, and will include performances by the Academy of Dance as well as Dynasty Dance Center. Santa and Mrs. Clause arrive by horse-drawn sleigh, and Mayor Alan Casavant and Santa light the tree. From there, the community is encouraged to partake in a scavenger hunt with a map through the downtown to pop-up businesses, lighting displays by local artists, and various retail establishments.

Heart of Biddeford Director Delilah Poupore is enthusiastic about this year’s additions.

“The downtown community is really getting into the spirit this year, offering promotions within our beautiful gift shops as well as adventures into stores that have ‘popped up’ for the holidays. We’re excited to build on a great family-friendly event in City Square to include opportunities to jump start local holiday shopping ideas.”

In addition to the events in City Square, kids are invited to get a free photo with Santa, courtesy of McKenney Photography. Photos with Santa take place at 11 Adams St., and kids will receive a wrapped gift. Free sleigh rides also run through the downtown until 7:30 p.m.

In the afternoon on Dec. 2, kids are invited to stop by Reilly’s Bakery between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. to decorate holiday cookies, an annual tradition sponsored by the bakery. This year’s cookies will include replicas of the City Hall clock tower. After the festival and scavenger hunt, the community is encouraged to enjoy dinner downtown, opening night at City Theater or a music performance at one of the downtown establishments.

City Theater’s “A Christmas Survival Guide” begins at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 2. The show runs Friday and Saturday nights as well as Sunday matinees until Dec. 18.

Toys for Tots will be on hand in City Square as a collection site for people who wish to donate presents to their annual campaign.
