OOB increases sub teacher pay

OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Following the lead of Biddeford School Department, Regional School Unit 23 voted to increase the pay rates for substitute teachers at its schools. Substitutes will now earn $75 per day, or $85 if they are current or formerly certified teachers or if they have completed a substitute teacher training course through Saco/Old Orchard Beach adult education. The vote passed unanimously at the RSU 23 school board committee’s meeting on Nov. 17.

As the Courier reported in its Nov. 10 issue, area school districts have struggled to find enough substitute teachers to serve their faculty. As part of their response, Biddeford and Saco schools will be having a job fair on Dec. 12 at the Pepperell Mill campus, in the community room, from 2 to 6 p.m.

Charter changes effective Jan. 1

BIDDEFORD – The changes to the city charter approved by Biddeford voters on Election Day will become effective on Jan. 1, 2017, according to City Manager Jim Bennett. There is no approval process or “fast tracking” to occur, Bennett said, but, for a couple of the changes, city council action is a required component alongside the charter amendment.

“The big one is, the council will have to put in place the public safety committee in order to replace the police and fire commission,” Bennett said. “We expect that we’ll have that done and in place by the end of the year.”

The other council action required by the charter changes, Bennett said, is the adoption of a code of ethics by Sep. 1, 2017.
