Official wants to partner with Canada

Rep. Ryan Fecteau (D-Biddeford) submitted a new legislative proposal for the first session of 128th Legislature that would create a tuition exchange program between Maine public universities and with participating Canadian provinces and their educational institutions.

A tuition reciprocity agreement, like the one Fecteau proposed, would not be the first of its kind. The University of Minnesota system has agreements with neighboring states and the provinces of Manitoba.

“We must find new and innovative ways to attract young people to our state,” Fecteau said. “I believe Canadian students would have a lot to offer our state during their studies and perhaps even following graduation.”

Fecteau, a member of the Legislature’s Labor, Research, Commerce and Economic Development Committee, is serving his second term in the Maine House and represents part of Biddeford.
