TA athlete gets top honor

In its 32nd year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company announced Mike Laverriere of Thornton Academy as its 2016-17 Gatorade Maine Football Player of the Year. Laverriere is the third Gatorade Maine Football Player of the Year to be chosen from Thornton Academy.

The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field and distinguishes Laverriere as Maine’s best high school football player.

“Michael ranks right up there with some of the best I’ve ever coached. We were young and inexperienced, and in our big-game situations we had to rely on Michael – certainly more so than we have with any one guy the last four or five years,” said Kevin Kezal, head coach at Thornton.

Laverriere remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.
