Biddeford’s WinterFest returns to downtown Feb. 3

Biddeford is readying for the fourth annual WinterFest, Feb. 3 to 5. Events will coincide with the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend, and will feature snow events in City Square as well as cultural events throughout downtown.

Initiated by Mayor Casavant in 2014, WinterFest is designed to be a cabin-fever buster, with events that appeal to a broad variety of people.

“The amazing part about WinterFest is seeing how many groups work together to make this happen,” Casavant said. “These groups and the WinterFest sponsors feel, as I do, that it’s important for the community to get out during the cold winter season, to stay connected to other people, and to experience all the progress that’s happening in Biddeford.”

The kick-off for the weekend will include entertainment in City Square (on Adams Street, next to city hall) with an ice-carving show beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3. The evening will also include a Winter Wonderland art show in city hall, a “Biddeford stroll” to all the downtown entertainment venues, and “Piano Men: the Music of Elton and Billy” at City Theater.

Saturday, the sledding hill will return to City Square from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., thanks to volunteer efforts from New Life Church. For the first time, dog sled rides will complement the sledding, snow shoe golf, food vendors and events at McArthur Library.

Saturday evening will start out with a Heart Health Fair in the Pepperell Center (40 Main St.) from 4 to 6 p.m. put on by students from University of New England’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. Then, Juston McKinney returns with his comedic tour to City Theater.

The directors of Heart of Biddeford and Chamber of Commerce both serve on the WinterFest committee, with hopes to draw customers to downtown restaurants and retail businesses.

“All of these events bring people downtown who may not otherwise come downtown that weekend,” said HOB Director Delilah Poupore.

Sunday is free ice-skating at West Brook Skating rink courtesy of the Knights of Columbus with pizza donated from Joker’s.

City Theater’s “Piano Men” was added to the line-up thanks to the Biddeford High School class of 1987, and proceeds will be donated to the BHS music programs. Joe Boucher, who graduated in 1987, has toured nationally with the show that features the music of Elton John and Billy Joel. While Boucher brings a string quartet and back-up band, he will also be joined by members of the Biddeford High School Jazz ensemble as well as high school vocalists. Tickets are $20 in advance (or $25 at the door) through the City Theater website: http://www.citytheater.org/shows/piano-men-musicelton billy/

WinterFest planning partners include: Biddeford Recreation Department, Biddeford, Saco Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Biddeford School Department, Biddeford mayor, Biddeford Economic Development, City Theater, Engine, Heart of Biddeford, Knights of Columbus, McArthur Library, New Life Church and UNE COM SOMA.
