AMVETS in Biddeford set goal

Earlier this month the Department of Maine AMVETS convened its annual state convention. While considerable attention focused on benevolent and charitable activities for the next 12 months, it was also a time to reflect on recent accomplishments.

AMVETS Post 1 in Biddeford earned awards and recognitions in several categories. One recognition highlighted $500 education grants Post 1 awarded to two Biddeford High School Seniors: Erica LeLand and Matthew Perkins. In a separate category, the Department of Maine AMVETS Past Department Commanders’ $500 education grant was awarded to Biddeford High School senior Gavin Power, nephew of son of AMVETS Squadron member Guy Lamontagne and his wife, Terri, a member of AMVETS Post 1 Ladies Auxiliary. Power is the son of Elizabeth Marion and Jamie Power. He was sponsored by Guy Lamontagne.

In a statement from Department of Maine AMVETS Service Foundation President, Gene Foster commended Post 1 and issued a challenge, “Post 1, and Biddeford almost had a convention hat trick – if there would have been a student from Biddeford High School going to the Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, Post 1 and Biddeford would have swept the table.”

Foster went on to add that this year there were no Freedoms Foundation applications from Biddeford or Saco. Any member of the AMVETS family are encouraged to submit applications for education grants at the local level as well as the state level. Applicants for Freedoms Foundation do not have to be affiliated with AMVETS. Education grant and Freedoms Foundation applications are available at AMVETS Post 1, 147 Alfred St., Biddeford, or online at AMVETSofMaine.com.
