One-woman play comes to Biddeford

“The Syringa Tree,” a one-woman play by Pamela Gien, returns to Engine, 128 Main St. in Biddeford, for two performances at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18 and Saturday, Aug. 19. The play will be performed by Courtney Wood and is produced by One Wood Productions.

Tickets are $25 for front row and $20 general seating, available on Eventbrite: https://syringa-tree.eventbrite.com, via phone 370-9130, and in-person at Engine.

“The Syringa Tree” is a story of love shared between two families during Apartheid, one black, one white, and the two children born into their shared household in early 1960s South Africa. Seen first through the eyes of a child, 6-year-old Elizabeth tries to make sense of the chaos, magic and darkness of her experience.

The story of the families’ destinies spans four generations from early apartheid to present-day free South Africa.

Performed as originally conceived, all 24 characters are portrayed by one actress.y
