Headmaster welcomes all to homecoming

To the editor:

Once again, it’s homecoming weekend at Thornton Academy. On behalf of the Thornton Academy Board of Trustees, I welcome our entire community to celebrate with us on Saturday, Sept. 30.

This year’s celebration will kick off with a new event, a community bonfire starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 at the edge of campus adjacent to the Eastern Trail. At 10 a.m. Saturday, our annual Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony will recognize the contributions of outstanding TA athletes and coaches over the decades. This year’s inductees include the 1991-92 Boys Basketball team, Michael Babcock 1990, Robert Giroux 1987, Mari Warner 1977, Jeff Griffith 1961, and John Waterman, 1918 (posthumous). The admissions office will hold an open house starting at 11 a.m. The parade of class floats will begin its journey down Main Street at noon and the football game versus rival Bonny Eagle starts at 1:30 p.m. at Hill Stadium.

Homecoming reconnects alumni, parents and friends to TA, reminding us all of the special place Thornton Academy holds in our hearts. That connection to TA was evident two weeks ago when more than 300 alumni who graduated more than 50 years ago gathered on campus for our annual Senior Alumni Reunion.

Homecoming is also a celebration of community. At Thornton Academy we are purposeful in introducing our students to the importance of being part of something larger than themselves, helping them realize the rewards of coming together to help one another. Our students mentor younger students at area elementary schools, they are active in food drives and work to raise awareness of and funds for a variety of causes, to name just a few examples. Students have expressed a desire to help those affected by the recent hurricanes in the southern U.S., so a portion of Saturday’s football gate proceeds will be donated to assist in disaster relief efforts.

To alumni and friends alike, welcome home. I hope to see you on campus as we celebrate homecoming this weekend.

Rene M. Menard, headmaster Thornton Academy
