Lewis Watkins

Lewis “Capt. Benny” Watkins, 68, of Saco passed away Dec. 22, 2017, unexpectedly while working at Southridge Living Center. He was born in Wytheville, Virginia on Dec. 5, 1949, the son of Lewis and Josie Hilton Watkins.

Benny was raised by his mother and grew up in the Washington, D.C., area. He came to Maine in the late 1970s and worked maintenance for Jordon Meats and La Batts Brewing. Then under the guidance of Hilda Dudley Cushing, he graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1984. Capt. Benny then worked the Casco Bay Lines for over 25 years.

In his semiretirement he worked for Southridge Living Center in Biddeford.

Benny was an avid hunter, enjoyed sail boats, bird watching, playing guitar and had a keen sense of humor. He also enjoyed the company of his recently adopted cat “Mr. Puss.”

Survivors include his mother of Oakland, Maine, his companion Katherine Landry of Saco, a son, Lewis Watkins Jr. of Oakland, a daughter, Melody Teng of Illinois, a sister, Joanne Watkins of Lewiston, four grandchildren, Christopher Lottle, Paige Littlefield, Danielle Watkins and Dakota Watkins, and three great grandchildren, Mikayla, Isabell and Willow.

A private family service will be held at the convenience of the family in the spring.

Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home and Cremation, 365 Main St., Saco, are entrusted with the arrangements.
