Paddle comp aims to raise awareness about erosion

Record high tides, in correlation with harsh winter storms caused more more erosion this spring at Camp Ellis and into Ferry Beach. To draw attention to the problems facing the Camp Ellis community, the FogDogs of Ferry Beach and the Ferry Beach Park Association will be hosting the first paddle-powered race on Saco Bay on July 28. Paddlers of all levels and types of paddle-craft are encouraged to join. (Drone photo courtesy of the city of Saco) The inaugural Fog Dog Paddle Power Race on Saco Bay will be begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 28 at the access point at the end of Morris Avenue, part of the Ferry Beach Park Association campus.

The FogDogs’ of Ferry Beach, a kayak and Stand Up Paddleboard conference along with the Ferry Beach Park Association is hosting the event in an effort to draw attention to beach erosion in the Camp Ellis and Ferry Beach area and to promote dune restoration action.

The course will run as a triangle. One mark will be over an eroded house lot off Camp Ellis, an offshore mark will be off Eagle Island or Ram Island depending on conditions and a third mark off the Bay View Beach area. There will be an on-thebeach mark as well for the elite group. The start and finish will be in the same location.

The degree of erosion and the effort to protect property will be highlighted. Turning marks will be located where homes used to be and where the shoreline used to meet the sea. FogDogs hope to energize the inland community with the event by promoting a commitment to long term solutions in efforts that support the rebuilding of Saco’s beaches.

Lunch will be available after award presentations.

The Fog Dog Paddle is open to all levels of paddlers and several types of paddle craft. Stand Up Paddleboards, kayaks and ocean canoeists are invited to join us. Elite and novice courses will be run with prizes for the top three finishers. Raffle items from local businesses will be available.
