Biddeford Savings funds scholarship

Imagine moving to a foreign country where you don’t speak the language and you don’t understand the customs. Habso Omani knows exactly what it feels like. She came to Portland from a refugee camp in Kenya at 6 years old. Despite the language and cultural barriers, Habso devoted herself to learning and immersed herself in the community. She is a leader at Portland High School as part of the Civil Rights team. She also spends summers volunteering at Maine Medical Center and serves as a tutor in the Summer of Science program, designed for kids who don’t typically have access to traditional summer programs.

Hasbo was recently awarded a $2,500 scholar- ship from Mainely Character, sponsored by Biddeford Savings. Mainely Character is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that recognizes and rewards high school seniors in Maine who demonstrate extraordinary character. Scholarship awards are based on four aspects of character: courage, integrity, responsibility and concern. Scholarships are funded by corporate partners such as Biddeford Savings that place a high value on strong character.

“Biddeford Savings is grateful for the opportunity to support Mainely Character, an organization granting scholarships to truly exceptional Mainers,” said Charles Petersen, president and CEO of Biddeford Savings, in a press release. “These young people exemplify the spirit of our State in meeting life’s challenges head on and overcoming them. Their stories are truly inspiring.”
