Did You Hear?

Did you hear? York County Veteran’s Alliance, located at 24 Bradbury St. in Biddeford, holds a weekly, public dance and dinner buffet 1 to 5 p.m. every Sunday that features oldies and contemporary music as a way of raising funds and also, as a way of giving back to the community.

The club, which boasts more than 500 members, hosts the dances in the non-smoking dance hall and this past Sunday, Aug. 5, featured the local classic rock band Spectrum, playing to a group of mostly older folks who come from as far away at Brunswick and Augusta. According to YCVA President, Linda Laverriere, the dances and buffet are a great way to give older members, of both the club and the community, a place to be able to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment and fun.

“These functions help raise funds but really its about having a place to go, to sit back and enjoy some great music at a great price and enjoy some good company,” said Laverriere, who is in her seventh year as president.

According to Vice President Dolores Higgins, the buffet is served during the last hour from 4 to 5 p.m. On the menu this week was American chop suey with a homemade Raspberry/ Blueberry/Strawberry cake for desert. “I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have this place,” said Laverriere, in the kitchen showing off the cakes, who lost her husband a few years back. “It gives me strength and a purpose, I love to feed everybody.”

The upcoming dance schedule includes local favorites Jose Duddy, Wild Horses and Steve and the Good Old Boys. For more information on the dances or York County Veteran’s Alliance activities, visit www.ycva.net.
