Seal washes up in Biddeford

There has been an unprecedented increase in the number of dead seals found along the Maine coast this summer, and on Aug. 21 Biddeford resident Jason Litalien found one on Fortunes Rocks Beach. According to a press release by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, over 400 seals have been found between the coasts of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts since June 1, with 179 found in Maine alone. Tests performed by the Nation Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, the seals tested positive for avian influenza and phocine distemper virus, which causes lethargy, coughing, sneezing and seizures in seals.
