Saco’s Garden for all Ages deemed a success after end-of-season dinner

Age Friendly Saco was awarded a grant from Maine Community Foundation in spring to create “Gardens for all Ages.” Raised gardens beds at the Saco Community Center, 75 Franklin St., were built by Rotary Club of Saco Bay and planted by the kinder-campers and teen campers at Saco Parks and Recreation, with the assistance of Age Friendly Saco volunteers.

The multi-generational program was guided by Age Friendly Saco as well as Amelia Meier and Megan Letendre, staff at Saco Parks and Recreation. Cooking classes were held for both the kindergarten camp as well as the teen camp teaching them about the value of incorporating fresh vegetables and herbs into a healthy diet. Letendre has a degree from the University of New Hampshire in ecogastronomy, which focuses on sustainable agriculture, hospitality management and nutrition. She was able to use those skills to not only teach students about sustainable agriculture but also helped to provide a farm to table dinner for all the volunteers and their families on Aug. 22.

The menu featured all of the items grown in the garden this summer and provided a sense of community and accomplishment for all involved in the project.
