Women’s art collective offers exhibit at UNE

The University of New England’s Maine Women Writers Collection is presenting an exhibition of artist’s books by Martha A. Hall, titled “My Creativity Heals Myself and Others.” Hall, who died in 2003 at 54, was an artist living on Orr’s Island who used artists’ books to explore the experience of living with cancer. The exhibition, held at the Ketchum Library Art Gallery on the university’s Biddeford campus, will run until Dec. 14.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the collection will host a one-day symposium Thursday, Sept. 13, also at Ketchum Library Art Gallery, titled “Tell Me What Hurts: Storytelling and the Healing Arts,” for which Hall’s work is the touchstone.

Hall’s books artistically depict the frustrations and vulnerabilities inherent in living with a chronic, lifethreatening illness. Hall hoped to use her books to create dialogue with health care providers and students in health professions training.

The exhibition is open to the public every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
