Retreats to be held

“The Wisdom of Henri Nouwen,” with Jim Markan will be held 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17 at Marie Joseph Spiritual Center in Biddeford.

Nouwen is acknowledged as one of the world’s great spiritual teachers. The inspirational writings and lectures of this Catholic theologian have touched millions of people. Participants will explore four of his favorite themes: community, compassion, forgiveness and dying well.

“In the Footsteps of Jesus” will be held 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7 with Ann Boyle.

Walking in the footsteps of Jesus is a way of life. It is about being in relationship, letting go, letting ourselves be transformed into his image. Participants will explore what it means to walk in the footsteps of Jesus as well as the struggles, the joy and the grace of being a disciple of Christ.

A watercolor retreat, “Gazing into Your Loveliness” with Kim Le Nguyen, will be held Friday, Oct. 19 through Sunday, Oct. 21.

The early church fathers described the purpose of religious images a “leading one upward.” They wrote that this art should raise the soul and mind of the beholder to the realm of the spirit. The retreat will be based on the book, “Meditations on Vatican Art” by Fr. Mark Haydu, which allows participants to deepen their relationship with God by reflecting on several religious artworks. Techniques on watercolor expression and their application to one’s spiritual life will be demonstrated.
